India has decided to appoint senior politician Dinesh Trivedi as its next high commissioner to Bangladesh, marking a notable diplomatic move, although formal confirmation is still awaited.
Trivedi, a former union minister and current leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is expected to replace Pranay Verma, who is set to take up a new assignment as India’s ambassador to the European Union in Brussels.
His nomination is being viewed as a significant step in India’s engagement with Bangladesh, at a time when both countries are working to stabilise bilateral relations. As per diplomatic procedure, Dhaka’s approval will be required before the appointment is finalised.
A seasoned political figure, Trivedi previously served as minister for railways and minister of state for health and family welfare during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government as a member of the Trinamool Congress. He later left the party in February 2021 and joined the BJP in March the same year.
The decision to appoint a senior political leader to a key diplomatic post signals New Delhi’s willingness to deploy experienced figures in strategically important neighbouring countries, expanding beyond the traditional reliance on career diplomats.
