On World Refugee Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said developing countries continue to bear an unfair and unsustainable burden of hosting refugees.

“Support is dwindling while needs are growing,” he said in a message, stressing that countries like Bangladesh—hosting over 1.2 million Rohingya for more than eight years—should not be left to face the crisis alone.

He praised refugees’ resilience and contributions, noting they strengthen economies, enrich cultures, and deepen social ties when given the chance.

“Becoming a refugee is never a choice. But how we respond is,” Guterres said, calling for action beyond words.

He urged global solidarity through increased humanitarian support, resettlement opportunities, access to education, work, and full rights, as well as ensuring refugees have a voice in shaping their futures.

Guterres also warned of rising xenophobia and highlighted ongoing crises in Sudan, Ukraine, Haiti, and Myanmar, with global displacement now exceeding 122 million people.
