Anis Alamgir was produced before the court on Monday afternoon, 15 December 2025 in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Journalist Anis Alamgir on Sunday rejected all allegations brought against him, telling a Dhaka court that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus could “turn the entire country into a prison” if he chose to do so.
Speaking during a remand hearing at the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam, Anis strongly condemned the case filed against him, calling it fabricated and politically motivated. “If Dr Yunus wants, he can make the whole country a prison. If he wants to turn it into hell, he can do that too,” he told the court.
Anis said he has questioned those in power for more than two decades, regardless of who governs the country. “I did so during Begum Khaleda Zia’s tenure, during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, and I am doing it now. I will continue to speak out under whoever comes next, because this is my profession,” he said.
He added that his opinions are shared openly on social media and television talk shows, insisting there was nothing secretive or provocative in his remarks. Referring to comments he made about attacks on Professor Yunus’s residence and Grameen Bank, Anis said his statements should be viewed in proper context. “When politics turns into revenge, it becomes a continuous cycle,” he added.
Claiming the country has entered a phase of “politics of revenge,” Anis alleged that those who supported the July movement and demanded the resignation of Sheikh Hasina are now being marginalised.
He also rejected any alleged links with others named in the case, including actor Meher Afroz Shaon, saying he had no political or business relationship with her and had met her only once at a cultural programme years ago.
Anis further alleged that individuals based abroad were conspiring to destabilise the country and derail the election, claiming they had targeted him with online abuse and demands for punishment. He said these individuals influenced a political party, which then appealed to the chief adviser, resulting in what he described as a false case against him.
Anis Alamgir was picked up by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Dhanmondi on Saturday and later arrested in an anti-terrorism case filed at Uttara West Police Station.
