A sudden grid failure plunged 21 southern districts—including the entire Barishal Division and parts of Khulna—into darkness on Saturday evening.

Officials at the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) said the outage began around 5:45 PM in one district and quickly spread across the region.

While the disruption caused widespread concern, power was restored to most areas within 45 minutes to an hour. In some districts, electricity returned within just 15 to 20 minutes due to swift action by PGCB teams.

“The transmission system is now operating normally across the Barishal and Khulna regions,” the PGCB confirmed in a statement.

The cause of the grid failure remains unclear, and as of filing this report, no investigation committee has been formed.

The incident highlights ongoing pressure on the national grid amid rising summer demand, with renewable energy sources still struggling to meet the load.
