India has imposed a complete ban on all imports from Pakistan, effective immediately, in response to escalating tensions following the Pahalgam attack.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a notification on May 2, stating that the ban is in the interest of national security and public policy.
The ban prohibits the direct or indirect import of all goods originating from or exported by Pakistan, including those in transit. It also mandates that any exceptions to this prohibition require prior approval from the Government of India.
This move comes as India takes further punitive diplomatic actions following the deadly attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, in which 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were killed. Additionally, India had previously closed the Wagah-Attari border, the only land trade route between the two countries, in the aftermath of the attack.
India has also suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, citing "sustained cross-border terrorism," and taken further steps such as halting visas for Pakistani nationals and downgrading diplomatic ties.
