Consumers will have to pay more for cooking gas as the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has raised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices once again, marking the second increase in less than three weeks.

The new rates will come into effect from 6pm on 19 April.

Under the revised pricing, LPG has been increased by Tk17.62 per kg. As a result, the price of a 12kg cylinder has gone up by Tk212, rising from Tk1,728 to Tk1,940.

However, prices of LPG supplied by state-owned companies remain unchanged. The 12.5kg cylinder will continue to be sold at Tk825.

The price of autogas, used in vehicles, has also been revised upward to Tk89.50 per litre, up from Tk79.77 per litre.

Earlier on 2 April, BERC had already increased LPG prices by Tk32.30 per kg. With the latest adjustment, the cost of a 12kg cylinder has risen by nearly Tk600 within a month, compared to Tk1,341 previously.

The latest hike comes a day after fuel prices were increased at the retail level, reflecting rising global oil market pressures.

BERC said the new LPG rate has been fixed at Tk161.66 per kg, based on international market trends and import costs.

Officials said rising shipping costs amid global instability have pushed up freight charges, contributing to the price increase.

Although LPG prices are revised monthly, consumers have long complained that cylinders are often sold at higher-than-fixed rates, particularly for the widely used 12kg household cylinders.

Since April 2021, LPG pricing in the country has been linked to international benchmarks, mainly the Saudi Contract Price set by Saudi Aramco for propane and butane. Exchange rates and import invoice averages are also used in determining the final retail price.
