Bangladesh seeks OIC support for migrant workers' rights
Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury on Monday called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Labour Centre to strengthen efforts to protect migrant workers by ensuring safe working conditions, social protection and dignified treatment across OIC member states.
The minister made the call during a meeting with OIC Labour Centre Director General Azar Bayramov on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Highlighting the contribution of millions of Bangladeshi migrant workers employed in OIC countries, Ariful Haque urged the centre to adopt more effective measures to guarantee workplace safety, social security and respect for workers' rights.
He said OIC member states could benefit from greater cooperation through the exchange of labour market information and best practices, noting that there is considerable scope for coordinated action to address the challenges facing workers in an increasingly dynamic global labour market.
Emphasising the importance of preparing young workers for future jobs, particularly in science, technology and the digital economy, the minister sought technical assistance from the OIC Labour Centre for skills development, employment generation and workforce training initiatives in Bangladesh.
He also assured Bangladesh's full support for any training programmes, workshops and capacity-building activities undertaken by the centre.
Bayramov thanked Bangladesh for signing the OIC Labour Centre statute and urged the government to complete its ratification process at the earliest.
He reaffirmed the centre's commitment to enhancing the skills of Bangladeshi migrant workers in OIC countries and promoting their workplace safety and social protection.
The Bangladesh delegation included Labour Secretary Md Abdur Rahman Tarafdar, Bangladesh Ambassador to Switzerland Nahida Sobhan, Additional Secretary Md Humayun Kabir, and Deputy Secretaries Syed Irtiza Ahsan and Md Shamsul Islam.
