The interim government on Sunday issued a firm warning that strict measures will be taken if a section of NBR officials persist with protests that threaten the national economy. These protests oppose proposed reforms in the tax authority.

Amid the worsening economic situation caused by the protests, the government declared all NBR operations as essential services and urged absentee officials to resume their duties, according to a government statement.

The statement announced plans to divide the NBR into two separate entities to improve the low tax collection rate and tackle widespread irregularities and corruption obstructing effective revenue collection.

The government also criticized some NBR officials for “unethically” disrupting business activities, foreign trade, and revenue collection over the past two months in the name of protest.

This so-called movement was described as “ill-intended” and a serious violation of national interests and the rights of the people. While the government has called for addressing the protesters’ concerns through dialogue, the officials involved have remained “uncompromising,” further damaging the economy.

The government warned that if these disruptions continue, it will be forced to take strict action.
