Enact reforms backed by consensus, leave rest for Parliament

Prof. Ali Riaz of the Consensus Commission.

Sir, The ongoing efforts by the Consensus Commission of the interim government to build agreement on key constitutional reforms mark an important step toward restoring democracy in Bangladesh and shielding it from the threat of future autocracy. In a political landscape as diverse and ideologically textured as ours, the very attempt to forge consensus across party lines deserves commendation.

While it is heartening to note that common ground has been found on several core issues, it is equally unsurprising that divergences persist on others. Political parties bring with them differing philosophies, lived experiences, and visions for the nation's future. To expect blanket unanimity is neither realistic nor necessary for progress.

At this juncture, the Commission would do well to prioritize enacting reforms where consensus already exists, laying a stable foundation for democratic regeneration. As for the unresolved matters, deferring them to the judgment of a duly elected and credible Parliament would not only honor democratic norms but also foster greater legitimacy and public trust.

History offers us a powerful precedent. The 1991 Parliament, initially marked by deep divisions, rose to the occasion and ultimately adopted a consensus Constitution that realigned Bangladesh with its republican spirit. With transparent elections and accountable leadership, our next Parliament, too, can rise to the call of the people.

The pursuit of democracy is not a sprint but a careful walk across stepping stones of shared purpose. Let us take the next step wisely.

Sincerely,

Nimanul Huq
