Four members of a family were found dead inside their locked home in Rangpur city on Saturday night, with police suspecting they may have been killed several days earlier.

The bodies of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty, 25, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, were recovered from their home in Machuapara.

Local residents alerted police around 10pm after noticing a foul smell coming from the house, which had reportedly remained locked from the outside for several days.

Police later broke open the lock and recovered the four bodies from different parts of the two-storey house. Priyam’s body was found under a bed, while the bodies of Pritilata and Agami were found on the roof. Ganapati’s body was recovered from a corner of the roof.

Police and forensic teams are investigating the scene to determine the exact cause and time of death. The bodies have been sent to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies.

Rangpur CID Inspector Sumit Chowdhury said the four may have been killed three to four days earlier. He said marks suggesting that something had been wrapped around the victims’ necks were found on each body.

Police are primarily investigating whether the killings were linked to a robbery, although they have not ruled out other possibilities, including a planned murder or a family-related tragedy.

Ganapati Chakraborty retired from teaching in December last year. He had since been providing homeopathic treatment at a chamber in Rangpur Cooperative Market.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Quader said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
