Iran said it carried out fresh missile strikes on Israeli and American targets across the Middle East, according to statements carried by state broadcaster IRIB on Wednesday.

The broadcaster described the attack as the “most intense and heaviest” barrage since the start of the ongoing war, saying the operation lasted about three hours and was conducted by Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.

According to the report, missiles were fired at several Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and Haifa, as well as West Jerusalem.

Israel’s military confirmed it detected incoming missiles and activated its air defence systems to intercept the threats. Air raid sirens were heard in several areas, including Jerusalem, while explosions were reported in the distance.

Iranian media also said the strikes targeted American facilities in the region, including sites in Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan region and the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain.

The conflict began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February, triggering waves of retaliatory missile attacks by Tehran.

Earlier, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said a number of ballistic missiles had been launched towards the US Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain and other facilities in northern Iraq.

The Guards also claimed that no US naval vessel had approached the Strait of Hormuz recently, disputing earlier remarks by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright about a navy escort for an oil tanker in the strategic waterway.

Fresh security alerts were reported across parts of the Gulf early Wednesday, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates saying their defence systems intercepted several incoming missiles and drones.
