Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today offered prayers seeking forgiveness for the martyrs standing the Central Shaheed Minar premises.
After paying homage to the Language Movement martyrs, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman offered a special prayer at the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar early today, marking an unprecedented moment in the country’s history.
Traditionally, the head of state or government leaves the monument immediately after placing wreaths. This time, however, the prime minister remained at the site to seek divine forgiveness for the martyrs through a formal doa.
The prayer was conducted by Hafez Mowlana Nazir Mahmud, Senior Imam and Khatib of the Dhaka University Central Mosque. He led supplications for the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War, the 1990 anti-autocracy movement and the July Uprising of 2024.
Special prayers were also offered for Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former three-time prime minister Khaleda Zia, along with prayers for the welfare of the nation and the success of the current government.
Earlier, the prime minister placed a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar at 12:08am to honour the language heroes.
Following the doa, Tarique Rahman paid further tribute on behalf of his cabinet, his political party and the family members of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia by placing separate wreaths at the monument.
