US military strikes on three suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean have killed eight people, according to US Southern Command.
In a statement shared on social media on Monday, the command said intelligence indicated the vessels were operating along known narco-trafficking routes and were actively involved in illicit drug smuggling.
“A total of eight male narco-terrorists were killed during these actions,” the statement said, noting that three were aboard the first vessel, two on the second and three on the third.
The strikes form part of an ongoing US campaign targeting maritime drug trafficking networks in the region, which the military says has resulted in more than 90 deaths to date.
