The death toll from the collapse of a multistorey residential building in southern Pakistan has risen to 16, as rescue operations continued into a second day in search of survivors.

Officials said that 10 additional bodies were pulled from the rubble overnight. The Civil Hospital confirmed receiving the 16 bodies and said several injured victims were being treated.

Emergency crews, assisted by heavy machinery, are searching for at least eight more people believed to be trapped under the debris. Local reports indicate that the building was located on a narrow street, making it difficult for larger equipment to access the site.

Footage showed rescue workers clearing rubble while anxious family members stood nearby, praying and waiting for news of their loved ones.

Building collapses are tragically common in Pakistan, where enforcement of construction regulations is often lax. Many buildings are erected using substandard materials, and safety standards are frequently overlooked in efforts to cut costs.

In a similar incident in June 2020, a residential building collapsed in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, killing 22 people.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the latest collapse as efforts remain focused on finding and rescuing any remaining survivors.
