Eleven people were killed and 20 more were injured Wednesday when a bus veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in southern Ecuador, emergency officials said.

"Unfortunately, 11 people have died" in the accident near Molleturo, in the Andean province of Azuay, ECU911 said in a statement.

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in the South American country, where more than 2,000 people died in road accidents last year, reports BSS.
