Three school students drowned while bathing in the Meghna River near the Bhatibandar Balurmath area of Sonargaon upazila this afternoon.

The deceased students were identified as ninth graders Asekin, 15 and Arefin, 15, and eight grader Abir, 14. All of them were students of Mograpara H.G.G.S. Smriti Government School in Sonargaon upazila.

Asekin and Arefin were twin brothers, sons of Mohammad Faruk of Barimajlish area under Mograpara Union in Sonargaon upazila while Abir was the son of Abdul Alim of the same area.

According to local sources, four friends left home in the morning saying they were going to school. However, instead of going to school, they went to bathe in the Meghna River in the Bhatibandar Balurmath area.

At one point, three of them—Asekin, Arefin and Abir—were swept away by the strong current of the river and drowned. The fourth friend however managed to swim to the shore.

After receiving the news, the local unit of the Fire Service began the rescue operation. Later, a diving team from Dhaka arrived at the scene and joined the operation.

About one and a half hours after the students went missing; the bodies of two of them were first recovered from the river. Later, at around 5:10 pm, the body of the remaining missing student was rescued.

Confirming the incident, Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of the Narayanganj Fire Service office, confirmed it saying the bodies were handed over to Sonargaon Police Station for the necessary legal procedures, reports BSS.
