Satellite-based high-speed internet service has been introduced on moving trains in Bangladesh for the first time on a trial basis, allowing passengers to access Wi-Fi during their journeys.

The experimental service, powered by Starlink, was launched on Thursday with technical support from Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited and cooperation from Bangladesh Railway.

Under the trial phase, passengers travelling on three intercity trains — Parjatak Express, Upaban Express and Bonolota Express — are currently able to use the Wi-Fi service free of charge.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to modernise passenger services and expand internet connectivity across the country’s transport network.

The project has been implemented under the guidance of Rehan Asif Asad, who oversees the ministries responsible for posts, telecommunications, information technology and science and technology.

Officials said the trial also aligns with a wider plan to gradually introduce free Wi-Fi services at airports and railway stations across the country.

To monitor the progress of the initiative, the adviser visited the project site twice on March 11 and observed the operational setup of the service.

During the visit, he said passengers would be able to access the internet easily by scanning a QR code inside the train coaches. He added that the service is currently being tested and that improvements will be made based on user experience and technical performance.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited, Imadur Rahman, said introducing satellite internet on moving trains would significantly improve passenger services and make rail travel more convenient.

He noted that reliable internet connectivity would allow passengers to remain productive while travelling, including participating in online classes, freelancing work and office tasks.

Railway officials said that if the trial phase proves successful, the satellite-based internet system will be gradually expanded to other high-demand intercity and non-stop train services across the country.

They added that the initiative is part of a long-term plan to modernise railway services and improve the overall travel experience for passengers in Bangladesh.
