Germany allows dual citizenship with Bangladesh under its new Citizenship Modernization Act which went into effect on June 27, 2024, allowing dual citizenship for all nationalities to obtain dual citizenship upon naturalization in Germany, provided Bangladesh also permits it.

Germany introduced dual citizenship with its Nationality Modernisation Act in 2024 to modernize its laws, attract global talent, foster integration, and recognize the globalized world. By removing the requirement to renounce one’s original nationality. This country aims to make naturalization less of a barrier, thereby encouraging immigrants to fully participate in German society and retain their cultural ties, while also supporting German citizens abroad who acquire a second citizenship.

Conditions are: those who wish to become naturalised German citizens must demonstrate that they are well integrated, possess good German language skills and are able to support themselves without having to rely on public funds.

Germany introduced dual citizenship primarily to attract skilled workers, and foster greater integration and inclusion for immigrants who have long contributed to the country. The reform, allows people to keep their previous citizenship when becoming German, recognizing the diverse ties to multiple countries and promoting social cohesion by affirming that immigrants “belong to Germany”.

The Advantages of Dual Citizenship:

Having German citizenship in addition to your existing citizenship has many advantages. It allows you to live, work, study and travel in Germany and other EU countries. As a German citizen, you can become self-employed, set up a company, or invest in Germany without any restrictions. The German passport will make international travel much easier if your job involves many stays abroad. You can travel to over 170 countries without a visa and use German consular services worldwide. German citizenship also offers considerable advantages when it comes to studying. German citizens can receive an excellent academic education at German universities without incurring excessive student fees.

Disadvantages of dual citizenship:

Double tax liability- Possible tax liability in both countries. Not all countries allow the choice of the country in which taxes are to be paid. Military service: Compulsory military service exists in some countries and could apply to dual nationals.

If a Bangladeshi with Dual Citizenship of Germany is having any kind of problem or trouble, Germany wont look after for the person.

Many of the Bangladeshi nationals and their descendants are living across the world.

They are expatriateas abroad either for job or education but need legal ties with their motherland.

Dual citizenship means that a person is a citizen of two countries, having legal rights and obligations in connection with both countries.

According to Bangldesh Embassy in Berlin, Germany, there is no readily available statistic for the number of Bangladeshi nationals holding dual citizenship in Germany.

Pakistan allows dual citizenship, but with certain restrictions. However, you should know that the Constitution of India does not allow dual citizenship.

If a Bangladeshi with dual German citizenship is in Bangladesh and has problems or difficulties there, Germany won’t take care of him. Outside of Bangladesh, they will.
