Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists-BFUJ and Dhaka Union of Journalists-DUJ have expressed deep concern over the arson attacks on the offices of Daily Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

In a joint statement, the journalists' bodies condemned and protested against the incidents, saying that attacks on the media outlets are not acceptable in any way.

"This is a direct strike on the freedom of the press and the people's right to know. We believe that it is never possible to establish the rule of law and democracy by suppressing the media. The media was suppressed during the previous fascist government as well," the statement read.

Citing such attacks as obstacles to healthy politics, the statement said BFUJ and DUJ have been fighting for an independent and free media since the beginning.

Also, it demanded legal action against those involved in harassment of New Age editor Nurul Kabir, and ensuring safety of journalists, reports BSS.
