Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, has died while receiving treatment at Singapore General Hospital. He had been critically injured in a gun attack on 12 December.
Inqilab Mancha confirmed his death in a Facebook post on the evening of 18 December. The BNP also expressed deep sorrow, noting that Hadi had been an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan visited Hadi at the hospital on Wednesday night and later informed Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus that Hadi’s condition was critical.
Hadi, a potential candidate for the upcoming national election, was shot in the head on 12 December in Old Paltan, Dhaka. The assailant reportedly fired from a motorcycle while Hadi was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw during electioneering.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency brain surgery, as doctors described his condition as extremely critical. The bullet had entered above his left ear and exited through the right side of his head, damaging the brain stem.
Hadi was later transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment and was airlifted to Singapore on 15 December, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
