People will reject those who obstruct democratic journey: Salahuddin

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed today said people will ultimately reject anyone who stands in the way of the country’s democratic progress.

“It took a long 16-year struggle and immense sacrifice to secure the right to vote,” he said. “That is why the people will not accept those who obstruct this democratic journey.”

He made the remarks while inaugurating the second day of the BNP’s seven-day programme, Plan for Nation Building, at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) Convention Hall in the capital.

The programme was presided over by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and moderated by Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, with other senior leaders also addressing the event. Leaders and activists from various JCD units were present.

Salahuddin accused a political party of deceiving the nation “under the pretext of selling religion,” claiming the party lacks principles, ideology, and a development plan. “Their mask has already been exposed,” he added.

He also highlighted the sacrifices of Tarique Rahman, saying, “His dedication to establishing democracy places Bangladesh’s interests above everything. That is why he says, ‘Bangladesh first.’ We, too, must ensure that our words and actions do not harm the country.”

Calling on JCD activists to counter misinformation on social media, he said, “Online abuse and character assassination have become widespread. You must lead the strongest counter-effort there.”

Salahuddin further reflected on the reforms and development initiatives undertaken during the tenures of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia. He urged party activists to adopt knowledge-based, merit-driven, and technology-focused political practices, saying slogans alone are not enough even for an opposition party.

Explaining the BNP’s future initiatives—such as the Family Card, Farmer Card, and Health Card—he stressed the importance of clearly conveying these benefits to the public. “Our work plan, including the 31-point demand, must be communicated effectively. Farmers should understand the Agriculture Card, women the Family Card benefits, and everyone the purpose of the Health Card,” he said.

The seven-day programme will continue until December 13, excluding Fridays, with participation from various BNP-aligned organisations including Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Ulama Dal.
