“At the same time (alongside writing to India to extradite them), we will soon sit to assess and decide whether any approach can be made to the International Criminal Court to bring these convicted persons back to the country,” he said.
The Law Adviser made the remarks while briefing reporters at the Foreign Service Academy after a meeting of the Council of Advisers, held with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus in the chair at the Chief Adviser’s Office.
He said the government is writing to India for the extradition of Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal, who were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. “Since they are now convicted and sentenced to death, we believe that India now has an additional responsibility to return them,” he added.
“We’re sending a letter to India, reminding it of its obligations under the Extradition Treaty, so that it carries out this responsibility to fulfil the desire of Bangladesh’s people for justice,” said Asif Nazrul.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also spoke at the briefing, reports UNB.
