National Consensus Commission Vice President Ali Riaz has emphasised the need for swift decision-making to finalise the July Charter, warning that time is running out to reach a consensus. He noted that the process cannot move forward without agreement on key issues.

Riaz made these remarks during his opening speech at the commission’s ongoing dialogue with political parties. Monday marked the 16th day of discussions in the second phase, held at the Foreign Service Academy. Today’s agenda focused on the fundamental principles of the state and whether the prime minister should hold multiple posts simultaneously.

Calling for immediate action, Riaz urged political parties to reach an agreement within the next 10 days. “If there is any disagreement from any party, it must be formally communicated and recorded in the charter,” he said.

Addressing political leaders, he reminded them of the sacrifices made during the Liberation War, the nation’s 53-year struggle, and last year’s unprecedented mass uprising. “We must move forward keeping these sacrifices in mind. There is no turning back and no way to ignore these chapters of our history,” he said.

Riaz assured political parties that nothing is being imposed upon them. “We have not imposed anything by force, nor will we. But we have presented issues we believe are critical for restructuring the state framework. Based on these, we hope to reach a consensus within the next 10 days to finalise a national charter,” he added.

Monday’s dialogue included participation from 30 political parties, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Citizen Party (NCP), Islami Andolan, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), and Ganosamhati Andolan.

The meeting was moderated by Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the interim government. Also present were National Consensus Commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Badiul Alam Majumdar, Iftekharuzzaman, and Ayub Miah.
