BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reaffirmed his party’s firm commitment to press freedom, pledging to defend it regardless of whether the BNP is in power.

"We can say with absolute clarity and conviction that we have always supported press freedom, continue to do so, and will uphold it in the future—whether in government or in opposition," Fakhrul said.

He made the remarks while addressing a discussion organised by the Editors' Council at the Jatiya Press Club on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

Fakhrul said the BNP has consistently stood by journalists in the face of repression and remains committed to protecting freedom of expression.

"We fought against the oppression journalists faced in the past, and we continue to resist it now," he stated.

Rejecting all forms of coercion aimed at stifling dissent, Fakhrul added, "We will never support the unjust imposition of one’s views on others. We uphold the right to freedom of thought and expression—this is our principle, our belief."
