Graft case against Tarique, Zubaida 2 bank officials testify

Two more prosecution witnesses have testified in the graft case against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman.

The two witnesses of Wednesday are- Senior Assistant Vice-President of Dhaka Bank, Aftab Ahmed Chowhdury and Senior Principal Officer Laila Jakaria of the same bank’s Banani Branch.

Dhaka’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman recorded the depositions of the two bankers and adjourned the hearing till July 9. Of the 56 prosecutions, 31 testified in the case up to Wednesday.

Earlier, on April 13, the court framed charges against the two fugitive accused as it scrapped a petition to allow them to appoint lawyers to defend them in their absence.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on September 26, 2007, filed the case with Kafrul Police Station against Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman and her mother Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu for amassing illegal wealth of Taka 4.81 crore and concealing information about their assets.

The anti-graft body submitted the charge sheet of the case to the court in 2008. - Special Correspondent
