Extortion, terrorism won't be spared: CCC Mayor

Greenwatch Desk Politics 2026-05-08, 10:54pm

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said extortion, terrorism or misconduct using the party's banner (BNP) will not be tolerated.

He warned such individuals may be expelled from the party and handed over to the police if necessary.

Despite facing hardships during the 17-year struggle, BNP leaders and activists remained loyal to the party. The sacrifices made during the period should not be tarnished by anyone's actions, said the mayor.

Speaking as the chief guest, Shahadat made the remarks at the Chattogram-9 constituency BNP's views-exchange on the post-13th national election situation, held at the Samarnika Community Center this afternoon.

He said, "Position and title are not significant; real politics involves standing by the people and upholding the party's ideology. Whether someone has a title or not is not a major concern. We follow the ideology of Shaheed Zia, Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman."

Abu Sufian, MP, presided over the programme. City BNP's former General Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar, BNP central committee member Shamsul Alam and former general secretary of city BNP freedom fighter Ekramul Karim, among others, addressed the meeting as special guests.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain encouraged the leaders and activists to remain hopeful and not lose faith.

The city mayor emphasized that BNP has only been in power for two months, and patience is necessary.

He stressed the importance of morality and urged people to stay away from opportunists who switch parties for convenience.

The mayor addressed the issue of waterlogging in Chattogram, attributing it to ongoing canal renovation and cleaning activities. He assured residents that the city will benefit from these efforts within the next six months, with a significant reduction in waterlogging expected. The mayor called for cooperation from all sectors of society and emphasized the need for a clean city.

He urged various party units, including Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal, to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their respective wards. The mayor stressed the importance of community involvement in building a clean city and raising awareness to prevent diseases like dengue and chikungunya.

As the president, Abu Sufian addressed concerns about terrorism and extortion, stating that no BNP leader or activist should be involved in such activities. He warned against malicious groups using the party's name for nefarious purposes and called on party members to work together to prevent such actions. Abu Sufian emphasized the collective responsibility to maintain peace and order in the area, reports BSS.
