The government on Tuesday appointed Humayra Sultana, an additional secretary at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, as the managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd.
With the appointment, Humayra Sultana has made history by becoming the first woman to hold the top executive positions at the national flag carrier.
An order issued by the ministry’s Biman-1 wing said she has been entrusted with the responsibilities of MD and CEO in addition to her existing duties. She will continue in these roles until a full-time official is appointed to the posts, according to the order.
Meanwhile, the government has cancelled the contract of the outgoing managing director, Shafiqur Rahman, following his arrest in connection with allegations of abusing his domestic worker.
Shafiqur Rahman and his wife were arrested on Monday in a case filed by the victim’s father a day earlier. A Dhaka court later rejected their bail pleas and sent them to prison.
