Auto-rickshaw drivers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila on Sunday, demanding permission for auto-rickshaw operations and an end to what they described as police harassment.

The blockade began in the morning in New Bazar area of Sreepur, where around 200 to 250 auto-rickshaw drivers gathered and occupied the highway.

They staged a protest calling for legal approval to operate auto-rickshaws on the highway and an immediate halt to what they termed unjustified police actions.

As a result of the blockade, traffic movement on the busy highway was severely disrupted, leading to long tailbacks.

Office-goers, students and other commuters, as well as pedestrians, faced significant hardship due to the congestion.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nasir Uddin said police teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the blockade, reports UNB.

He said police were working to bring the situation under control and remove the protesters from the highway to restore normal traffic flow.
