UK Pledges £10M for Myanmar Earthquake Relief

The UK has announced £10 million ($12.9 million) in humanitarian aid for Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that claimed over 1,600 lives and caused widespread destruction in the war-torn nation.


In a statement, the UK Foreign Office outlined that the funds will primarily focus on providing food, water, medicine, and shelter to the hardest-hit regions.

"UK-funded local partners are already on the ground, mobilizing their response to support those affected," said Development Minister Jennifer Chapman. "I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of Myanmar in the wake of this tragic disaster."

The earthquake, which struck central Myanmar with a 7.7 magnitude, prompted a rare appeal for international assistance from the country’s ruling junta. The UK, however, has previously imposed sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the junta.
