The European Parliament and its subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) play a crucial role in protecting, promoting and defending human rights globally.

A six-member delegation from the European Parliament, led by Mounir Satouri, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, is scheduled to visit Bangladesh from 15–19 September to hold a series of meetings with key stakeholders.

The delegation will meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, National Consensus Commission Vice Chair Prof Ali Riaz, and representatives from major political parties, including the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party (NCP).

Members of the delegation will also visit Cox’s Bazar and meet with Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammed Mizanur Rahman.

The visit focuses on migration management, human rights, potential election observation, and investment discussions, as both Dhaka and Brussels aim for productive talks on broader issues.

The European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) plays a crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights globally. It monitors respect for human rights in the EU’s external policies, ensuring that areas such as refugee protection, migration, and trade align with international human rights law.

The subcommittee engages with civil society, human rights defenders, and international bodies to collect information, advocate for improvements, and encourage action.

Recently, Head of the EU Delegation Ambassador Michael Miller held discussions with Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam to review Bangladesh-EU relations and cooperation.
