Sheikh Russel KC emerge group top to reach quarterfinal

Dhaka, 21 Nov - Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra emerged group A champions to confirm their quarterfinal spot of the Bashundhara Group Independence Cup Football beating Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited by 3-0 goals int heir last group A match held Monday at Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj.

In the day's match, Ivorian midfielder Kpehi Didier Brossou, forward Mohammad Ibrahim and Nigerian forward Mfon Sunday scored one goal each for Sheikh Russel who led the first half by 1-0 goal.

Brossou opened an account scoring the first goal for Sheikh Russel early in the 2nd minute while after the breather Ibrahim doubled the lead scoring the second goal in the 51st minute of the match.

Sunday completed the winners' tally scoring the third goal for Sheikh Russel in the 59th minute of the match.

Mohammedan however tried their best to stage a fight back creating some scoring chances, but could not convert any in the remaining proceeding and eventually they had to leave the field with defeat. Sheikh Russel Krira Chakkra will play the first quarterfinal match against group B runners-up team on Saturday (Nov 26) at Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla.

Earlier, Sheikh Russel KC played 1-1 draw with Fortis Football Club in their group opening match and blanked Bangladesh Navy Football Club by 2-0 goals in their second match.

While the traditional black and white Motijheel outfit Mohammedan earlier Bangladesh Navy Football Club by 2-0 goals in their opening match and defeated Fortis Football Club by 3-1 goals in their second match of the group.
