Heavy rain during the past few days accompanied with the onrush of water from the upstream regions in India have lead to the rise of water in the Kushiyara river.

The water level in Kushiyara river is flowing about two meters above the danger level. As such, most areas in Zakiganj upazila have been flooded.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of the Water Development Board said that the river water is flowing above the danger level at six places in Sylhet and Moulvibazar.

At 9 am today, the water level was 84 centimeters above the danger level at the Kanaighat point of the Surma river, 184 centimeters at the Amalshid point of the Kushiyara river, 46 centimeters at the Sheola point, 34 centimeters at the Fenchuganj point, 27 centimeters at the Railway Bridge area of the Manu river and 67 centimeters at the Moulvibazar point.

As the water continued to rise, the dike of the Kushiara river started overflowing in the early hours of today near Rarai village in Zakiganj Sadar union.

The dam broke in Bakharshal of the same union and Loharmahal area of Khalachhara union around 8 am.

Water entered the locality through these areas. A part of the dike has also collapsed into the river near Maijkandi village.

Water is flowing over the dike in at least 50 places in the upazila, including Chhabria, Senapatirchak, Ichapur, Pillakandi and Amalshid.

Suranjan Mallick, an insurance officer in Zakiganj poura town, said that the main road of the municipality has been submerged in water. Water has entered the roadside shops.

Zakiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Mahbubur Rahman said, "The administration is working round-the-clock to deal with the flood situation. Several shelter centers have been opened.

Along with the administration, local people are also working voluntarily to protect the dam by dumping sandbags in the affected areas.

Water Development Board Sylhet Executive Engineer Deepak Ranjan Das said that water is flowing at Amalshid point about two meters above the danger level.

As water is overflowing the dikes, erosion has occurred in some places. Initiatives will be taken to repair the dikes when the water recedes, reports BSS.
