The water level of all the rivers including Teesta, Dharla, Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar in Kurigram flowing through the district has increased due to the heavy rain and the onrush water from the upstream.
The low-lying areas in the river basins have been inundated as a result of rising water, affecting families living in the Char areas under the Sadar and Ulipur upazilas of the Kurigram district.
Hundreds of people are in extreme suffering due to the lack of pure drinking water and dry food. Various vegetable fields in these areas have been submerged. Domestic animals have been shifted to a higher place or in a boat.
Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said that all the rivers flowing through the district continue to rise and they are likely to flow above the danger limit on June 22 and 23.
