Dhaka has been facing acute low gas pressure following water intrusion into a damaged distribution pipeline during repair work, alongside an overall shortfall in gas supply to the capital, according to Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited.

In a statement issued on Thursday (9 January), Titas said a gas pipeline laid beneath the Turag River at Amin Bazar was damaged after being hit by the anchor of a cargo vessel.

Although the damaged section of the pipeline has since been repaired, water entered the line during the repair process, severely disrupting gas flow across the Dhaka metropolitan area.

The company said the situation has been further worsened by a reduced volume of gas supply to the city, resulting in a severe low-pressure condition in many areas.

Titas added that efforts are underway to resolve the problem and restore normal gas pressure as quickly as possible, while expressing regret over the temporary inconvenience caused to consumers.
