The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday recommended in-principle approval for procuring liquefied natural gas (LNG) from five international suppliers through government-to-government (G2G) and direct procurement methods to help ensure an uninterrupted gas supply across the country.

The recommendations were made at a meeting of the committee chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division placed two proposals seeking approval for LNG procurement under the Public Procurement Act, 2006, and the Public Procurement Rules, 2025.

Under the first proposal, the committee recommended in-principle approval to process LNG supply proposals submitted by Cheniere Marketing International LLP and Trafigura Pte Ltd through the G2G method.

The proposal was processed under Section 68 of the Public Procurement Act, 2006, and Rules 99(2) and 107(2) of the Public Procurement Rules, 2025.

The second proposal sought approval to procure LNG directly from BP Singapore Pte Limited, Sahara Energy Resource Limited and Shell International Trading Middle East Limited FZE.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division cited the urgent need to maintain normal gas supplies in the national interest as the basis for the proposed direct procurement.

The proposal was submitted under Section 68 of the Public Procurement Act, 2006, and Rules 107, 97 and 98 of the Public Procurement Rules, 2025. The committee also recommended approval in principle for this proposal.

The recommendations are intended to facilitate LNG procurement from the five suppliers. However, the proposals did not specify the quantities to be purchased, contract values or delivery schedules.
