For many citizens of Bangladesh, the national election on 12 February will be their first time voting. Understanding the process beforehand can help ensure a smooth experience and allow every eligible voter to exercise their democratic right with confidence. This year’s election is especially significant, as it includes both the 13th National Parliamentary Election and a referendum.

Finding your polling centre

A common challenge for first-time voters is locating the correct polling station. Arriving at the wrong place or not confirming in advance can cause delays. The Election Commission (EC) offers several ways to check your polling information:

SMS: Send “PC” followed by your National ID (NID) number to 105 to receive your serial number and polling centre details.

Online portal: Visit the EC website and enter your 13-digit NID, date of birth, and captcha verification.

Mobile app: The “Smart Election Management BD” app provides maps and photos of polling centres.

Hotline: Call 105 from 8am to 8pm for assistance if digital options are not available.

It is strongly recommended to verify polling details ahead of time to avoid confusion.

What to bring

Voters should carry their NID and voting serial number. If the NID is lost or damaged, contact the EC hotline for guidance. Alternative photo IDs such as a passport or driver’s licence, and voter slips or registration certificates, can help speed up the verification process.

How to vote

Polling runs from 7:30am to 4:30pm to accommodate two ballots—one for the parliamentary election (white) and one for the referendum (pink).

Steps at the polling centre:

1.Present your NID to the presiding officer with your face visible.

2.Officials will verify your identity and mark your name on the voter list.

3.Receive both ballots and check for the official seal and signature.

4.Your left hand will be marked with indelible ink to prevent double voting.

5.Use a private booth to stamp your choices, then fold the ballots to conceal your selections.

6.Place the ballots in the sealed ballot boxes under supervision.

Rules to follow

Do not take photos of ballots.

Campaign materials are banned within 400 yards of polling stations.

Avoid influencing other voters, entering booths with others without permission, or causing disruption.

Remain patient and respectful to officials and fellow voters.

Voting is more than a procedure—it is a declaration that your voice matters. Participating in this election, which includes both a parliamentary vote and a referendum, shapes policies, priorities, and the country’s future. By voting, you join the shared story of Bangladesh and make your voice heard.
