The Election Commission (EC) will decide on Sunday whether to include BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman in the national voter list to be used for the upcoming general election and a referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said their applications would be placed before the commission for approval. “If the commission approves, their names will be included in the voter list for the February 12 polls,” he told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban.
Tarique Rahman and Zaima Rahman completed their national identity card (NID) and voter registration formalities at the EC’s NID office at the Electoral Training Institute earlier in the day.
The EC secretary said the registration was processed under the authority granted by the Electoral Rolls Act, 2009, which allows the commission to enrol eligible citizens as voters.
“They have completed the registration process. It takes some time to process the applications, but I expect it to be completed today, after which they will receive their NID numbers,” he said.
Once processing is complete, the matter will be formally submitted to the commission for final approval to include their names in the voter list for the parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order.
