The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has formally requested written proposals from Bangladesh regarding its commitment to reducing import duties on American goods.

In a letter to Bangladesh’s Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin on May 7, USTR Jamieson Greer acknowledged Bangladesh's efforts to address the trade gap with the US and welcomed the country's willingness to engage in negotiations on US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff policy.

Greer emphasized the USTR’s readiness to work with Bangladesh in tackling the persistent trade deficit by reducing agricultural and industrial tariffs, eliminating non-tariff barriers, and aligning economic security concerns.

“We appreciate the positive steps Bangladesh has taken regarding key US interests and urge the government to address other trade-related issues, including labour rights violations and measures affecting digital trade,” Greer stated.

The USTR concluded the letter by expressing eagerness to receive Bangladesh’s written offer in order to initiate formal discussions.
