Far left “Die Linke“ wins province, Berlin state election, far-right “AfD“ in Germany’s northeast, Mecklenburg Vorpommern, reports Al Jazeera, after the two Germany provincial elections on 20 September 2026.

Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party notched another recent high-profile electoral victory after coming in first place in state elections in the country’s northeastern state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Sunday, results the country’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz called a “disaster.

According to AJC (American Jewish Committee): The AfD has increasingly defined German citizenship and belonging in ethnic and cultural terms. Central to this politics is the concept of “remigration,” a term used by AfD politicians and the broader far right to describe the removal of migrants from Germany.

Ahead of the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, migrants fear the consequences of the far-right anti-immigrant AfD party coming to power. At the same time, voters with an immigrant background are turning away from political parties. Economists and local leaders warn that the AfD's anti-immigrant platform could severely weaken Saxony-Anhalt's economy.

The concept has generated particular concern because discussions surrounding it have extended beyond deporting people without legal status to questions about removing people who are legally resident or even German citizens but considered insufficiently German.

This party aims to send "illegal migrants" back to "a safe country of origin." 

Munich Security Conference: U.S. Vice President JD Vance met with AfD leader Alice Weidel on the sidelines of the conference in February 2025, during the Munich Security Conference. He criticised European political leaders for refusing to cooperate with right-wing and populist parties like the AfD.

The Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party rattled European politics this week after a convincing victory in a German state election, which placed it only a few seats away from forming the country’s first state-level far right government since the second world war. Elon Musk was thrilled. In boosting the AfD and receiving their adulation in return, Musk and the party have developed a symbiotic relationship to spread their far-right views both in Germany and the US.

Alice Weidel said, "Burqas, girls in headscarves, knifemen enjoying social support, and other no-goods will hardly help to secure (Germany’s) wealth, growth and social system."

This remark appeared to equate most or all immigrants with extremists, criminals and misogynists, and was at the time picking up on the belief that the majority of crimes in Germany might be committed by migrants.

The AFD chief Ms Weidel who is in a Lesbian relationship with Sarah Bossard was born in Sri Lanka, adopted by a Swiss couple as a child, and holds Swiss nationality. Weidel has noted that because Bossard grew up in Switzerland, she does not view herself as having a traditional migrant background.
