Two cousins drown in Kushtia



Kushtia, Apr 17 - Two cousins drowned in the Gorai river in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia on Wednesday noon.

The deceased were identified as Shefa, 13, daughter of Shamim Islam of Sherkandi area and Shahzada, 7, son of Alamgir Hossain of Zainabad area of the upazila.

According to locals, Shefa came to visit her grandfather's house in Zainabad area on Friday.

Around 12 pm on Wednesday, five children including Shefa and her cousin Shazada went to take a bath in the Gorai River.

At this time, all of them jump together from the bank into the deep area of the river. Shefa and Shahzada both drowned as they did not know how to swim.

Locals rescued the two kids and took them to the Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Chapra Union Council Chairman Enamul Haque Manju said that a pall of gloom descended on the area after the tragic incident.

Police were sent to the spot, said Akibul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) at Kumarkhali Police Station.

The bodies were kept at Kushtia General Hospital morgue, added the OC.-UNB
