Most buildings in Old Dhaka are highly vulnerable and pose serious safety risks, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Chairman Engineer Md Reazul Islam has warned.

He said that numerous six- to seven-storey structures have been constructed on plots smaller than one katha, in clear violation of approved designs and basic safety standards.

Reazul Islam made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to journalists after inspecting several risky buildings in Bangshal, one of the most congested parts of Old Dhaka.

He said RAJUK has initiated a comprehensive plan to reorganise and modernise urban development in Old Dhaka while preserving its century-old architectural heritage. The initiative aims to protect both residents and cultural landmarks from the growing threat of illegal and unsafe construction.

Referring to the building in Kosaituli where a railing collapsed during a recent earthquake, he issued a strict warning: the structure will be sealed off if the owners fail to submit its approved design within seven days.

“Those who are still constructing buildings by force are having their utility meters disconnected. Yet some continue their work using illegal meters or generators,” he said, adding that RAJUK will intensify monitoring and take legal action against all unauthorised construction to prevent a major disaster in the area.
