Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus receives a commemorative plaque from Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri during a meeting at the Mayor’s office.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep appreciation to the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, for supporting the Bangladeshi community and recognising their successful cultural integration and contributions to both Italian society and the Bangladeshi economy.

“Thank you for taking such good care of the Bangladeshi migrants,” Professor Yunus said during a meeting with Mayor Gualtieri at his office on Monday (Rome Time).

He highlighted that Bangladeshi migrants in Italy not only contribute to the host economy but also support their country back home through vital remittances.

“They are now culturally integrated here. Many chefs in top Italian restaurants are from Bangladesh,” Professor Yunus noted.

Mayor Gualtieri also commended the Bangladeshi diaspora for their positive role in Rome’s multicultural landscape and warmly welcomed Professor Yunus to his office, located amidst the historic ruins of the Roman Empire.

From his office balcony, the Mayor gave the Chief Adviser a brief view of the ancient Roman Senate and surrounding archaeological sites.

During the meeting, Mayor Gualtieri presented a commemorative plaque to Professor Yunus. The plaque features a carved image of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor and philosopher, and has recently been gifted to several world leaders, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The bilateral discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening cultural ties between Rome and Bangladesh, particularly given that over 50,000 Bangladeshi nationals live in the Italian capital.

The leaders also touched on topics including Bangladesh’s upcoming national election, safe migration, and the potential for a future visit to Bangladesh by the Italian Prime Minister.

SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Italy, Rokebul Haque, were present at the meeting.
