Algeria has expressed strong interest in expanding educational collaboration with Bangladesh through student exchange programs, inter-university partnerships, and academic cooperation.

Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Abdelouahab Saidani, emphasized this potential during a program marking the 69th National Student Day of Algeria at the embassy in Dhaka on Monday.

"Strengthening bilateral cooperation through educational exchanges will foster deeper ties between our two friendly nations, considered pillars of the Islamic Ummah," said Ambassador Saidani.

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Algerian flag and a minute of silence in tribute to the martyrs of Algeria’s independence struggle. The national anthem was also played.

The day commemorates May 19, 1956, when Algerian students suspended their studies to join the national liberation movement. Ambassador Saidani highlighted their sacrifice, citing the famous slogan: "Diplomas do not make better corpses."

He described the student-led movement as a defining moment in Algeria’s history, calling it an act of purposeful defiance that helped unify the country during its struggle for freedom.

The ambassador also pointed to Algeria’s post-independence achievements, particularly in literacy and higher education, and urged students in both countries to draw inspiration from the past to contribute to nation-building.

"Let us honour those sacrifices by working together toward a brighter, more equitable future," he concluded.

The event was attended by diplomats, students from Bangladeshi and Algerian universities, and other guests, who praised the mutual commitment to education and development.
