Egypt’s FM Travels to Washington for Gaza Talk
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty traveled to Washington on Sunday for talks with top US officials and members of Congress following President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to relocate Gazans to Egypt and Jordan.
The visit comes ahead of an emergency Arab summit, set to take place in Cairo on February 27, to address "the latest serious developments" regarding the Palestinian territories.
According to Egypt’s foreign ministry, Abdelatty’s trip aims to strengthen bilateral relations and further the strategic partnership between Egypt and the US. The talks will focus on regional developments, including efforts to counter Trump’s Gaza plan.
Egypt has been actively seeking support from Arab nations to oppose the relocation proposal, with Abdelatty engaging with key partners such as Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
In a separate statement, Egypt announced the emergency summit, which follows extensive consultations with Arab countries, including Palestine, which requested the gathering. The meeting is also being coordinated with Bahrain, the current chair of the Arab League.
Trump’s recent comments about rebuilding Gaza into the "Riviera of the Middle East" and resettling Palestinians in Egypt and Jordan have sparked widespread criticism. Arab countries have firmly rejected the proposal, reaffirming their support for a two-state solution, with an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
