Bangladesh and India on Thursday discussed ways to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, including joint training initiatives.

The talks took place when Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, met Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi at South Block. Both sides also explored opportunities for deeper collaboration to promote regional peace and security.

The High Commissioner said he was pleased to meet General Dwivedi and review Bangladesh-India ties, particularly in defence cooperation.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman is scheduled to visit India next week for bilateral talks with his Indian counterpart, Dr S Jaishankar. This will be the first high-level engagement since the Tarique Rahman-led BNP government assumed power, following a period of strained relations.

After the India visit, Dr Rahman will travel to Mauritius to attend the 9th Indian Ocean Conference.
