In a shocking incident, nine people — including several women — were injured during a violent robbery on an ambulance transporting a deceased man in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar early Thursday (23 May).

The robbery occurred around 1am in the Tilpara area of Burishwar Union. According to Nasirnagar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Md Khairul Alam, police received reports of the attack, though the full list of looted items has yet to be confirmed.

The deceased, Shobdar Ali, a resident of Mukbulpur village in Purbobhag Union, had died the previous night while undergoing cancer treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. His body was being transported home in the ambulance when the incident took place.

Relatives said the robbers blocked the road by placing trees across it, forcing the ambulance to stop. They then assaulted the passengers — including women — with locally made weapons.

Alamgir, the deceased’s son, alleged that the robbers became enraged when they failed to find valuables to match their demands and even attacked the corpse with sharp weapons in front of horrified family members.

The assailants reportedly made off with at least 10 mobile phones and over Tk 50,000 in cash.

The brutal nature of the attack, especially the desecration of the body, has left the local community in shock. Residents described it as one of the most appalling crimes the area has witnessed.

OC Khairul Alam confirmed that police have launched an investigation and are working to recover the stolen items and apprehend the perpetrators.
