
The deceased was identified as Md Shariful Islam, 32, son of Matiur Rahman, a resident of the Uttar Cheranga area in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district.
The incident took place around 10:30pm in the Dhanpur area under Uttar Durgapur union, adjacent to Kotbari Bishwa Road in Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila.
Sub-Inspector Sankar Kanti Das, in-charge of the Cantonment Police Outpost, said Shariful, a Brazil supporter, celebrated and taunted Argentina fans after Argentina conceded the opening goal during the match against Egypt.
The remarks sparked a heated exchange between supporters of the two teams.
At one stage, several Argentina supporters allegedly attacked Shariful, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rescued and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station Touhidul Anwar said an altercation over the football match escalated into a physical assault, resulting in the death of a young man, reports UNB.
He said no written complaint was filed by the victim's family. Legal action will be taken upon receiving a complaint, while police are working to identify those involved in the incident.
