A local leader of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir was killed and another man seriously injured in an alleged attack over a dispute surrounding the election of a government primary school's managing committee president in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha on Sunday.

The deceased, Saiful Islam, 22, was president of the Bonarpara union unit of Chhatra Shibir. The injured, Salauddin, son of Habibur Rahman of Tair village, is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Police detained one suspect, identified as Ashraf, in connection with the killing.

Witnesses said an altercation broke out around 3:00pm between the headmaster of Kachua Government Primary School Habibullah, and Mukul, son of Jahidul Islam of Bati village, over the election of the school's managing committee president.

Saiful and Salauddin, who were present at that time, sided with the headmaster.

At one stage, Mukul, his brother Palash and their associate Ashraf allegedly attacked Saiful and Salauddin with sharp weapons, leaving them critically injured.

Locals rescued the victims and took them to Saghata Upazila Health Complex. As Saiful's condition worsened, he was transferred to Gaibandha General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Salauddin was later shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for advanced treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Saghata Police Station Mahbub Alam said additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, and efforts were underway to arrest the remaining accused.

Saghata upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Ibrahim Hossain condemned the killing and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, reports UNB.
