Sensational theft at city house: Maid, her fiancé held

A fugitive maid and her fiancé have been arrested by police for their alleged involvement in a sensational theft at a house at Bashundhara in the capital.



 A fugitive maid and her fiancé have been arrested by police for their alleged involvement in a sensational theft at a house at Bashundhara in the capital.

Maid Jyotsna Akter and her fiance Md Jamal were arrested from Khilhet area in the capital on Thursday. According to their confession, police later recovered stolen gold jewelries from an abandoned toilet of a relative of Jyotsna at Bholahat in Chapainawabganj district.

On May 21 last, a resident of Basundhara residential area lodged a complaint with Bhatara Police Station. Based on the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested the maid and her fiance. At that time, they recovered gold jewelries weighing 20 bhories stolen from the house and mobile phones.

Bhatara Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Sajedur Rahman disclosed it at a press conference held at Bhatara Police Station on Friday afternoon.

The OC said a resident of Basundhara area made a complaint on May 21. Later, he filed a case mentioning his housemaid Jyotsna Akter as a suspect. The victim also mentioned that he and his wife were the service-holders. None except his elderly mother lives at the house. Jyotsna joined the work through a source which supplies maids. Taking advantage of it, Jyotsna fled away from the house stealing the gold jewelries, cash and mobile phones from the house.

During primary investigation, Jyotsna told police that she was involved in burglary in guise of maid. She also involved in burglaries earlier. Her fiance Jamal helped her fleeing after she had committed the burglary.

Arrested Jamal is a driver by profession. He drives rented vehicles. He assisted Jyotsna in committing burglary from the very beginning. Bhatara Police Station OC also said there is a warrant in another against Jyotsna.

The OC said, "We see many people don't pay any heed about the maids. Some of them also give their keys to the maids. But, all should be cautious about it."
