Hasan Mahmud continued his impressive run in Test cricket, claiming his fifth five-wicket haul as Bangladesh fought back against West Indies on the Day 2 of the second and final Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.

Hasan grabbed five wickets in the morning session, including the prized scalp of centurion Amir Jangoo, to give Bangladesh a much-needed breakthrough after West Indies had dominated the opening day.

Jangoo, who remained unbeaten on 111 overnight, was bowled by Hasan after facing 212 deliveries, with the pacer producing a delivery that the West Indies batter opted to leave, only to see his off-stump disturbed.

Hasan struck again in the following delivery, removing Roston Chase with a catch behind the stumps. He came close to claiming a hat-trick, but debutant Joshua Bishop survived an lbw decision after successfully reviewing the umpire's call.

However, Hasan completed his five-wicket haul when wicketkeeper Liton Das produced a brilliant stumping to dismiss Justin Greaves before lunch.

The five-wicket haul was Hasan's fifth in Test cricket, making him the most successful Bangladesh fast bowler in terms of five-wicket hauls. He surpassed Shahadat Hossain, who claimed four such hauls in 38 Tests.

The achievement also marked Hasan's first five-wicket haul on home soil in his 19-Test career.

His previous five-wicket hauls came against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024, India in Chennai in September that year, Australia in Darwin in August this year and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi last month, where he also claimed a hat-trick.

Hasan's performance proved crucial for Bangladesh, who had managed just one wicket in the final two sessions on the opening day after Taskin Ahmed had made early inroads.

West Indies were comfortably placed overnight, with Jangoo unbeaten on a century and Greaves well settled at the other end. But Hasan's impressive spell with the new ball changed the complexion of the contest, reports BSS.
